Winter Activities in L.A.
Many people laugh when they hear the words “Winter” in association with Los Angeles. We guess it is hard to believe the land of sunshine and beaches is anything but warm and wonderful. And while we agree that it is warm and wonderful, we still do have our version of “winter” here (sweaters and sweatshirts anyone?!?!). Plus some fun “California” winter adventures. Here are a few of our favorites.
Surf & Snowboard in the same day
One of the great things about visiting LA any time of the year is that you can visit the beach and the mountains all in one day. This means in the winter you can surf in the morning and hop on a ski lift in the afternoon. Big Bear mountain is only a few hours from the city and if you want to take a longer road trip, you can visit Mammoth Mountain. Either way, you can enjoy the close proximity of the sand and the mountains whenever you want – and you don’t even have to leave the state!
Go Sledding…At the beach!
You can participate in this popular trend at many of our LA beaches that have large hills of packed sand where you can “sled” or “snowboard” to your hearts content . While we would love to think these man made hills were made solely for our enjoyment, they are actually sand berms that prevent the beach from flooding during the winter months. The Department of Beaches and Harbors brings in bulldozers to push dry sand from the ocean side of the beach into mounds that are 10 to 12 feet high; some mounds are as long as 416 yards. No foreign materials are used. It takes approximately three to five days to construct one mound and three weeks to complete the full set along the coastline.
Ice Skating
Longing for a winter tradition? Then go ice skating downtown or at ICE in Santa Monica. ICE in Santa Monica is an 8,000 square foot rink where you can spend a few hours celebrating the season with friends and family. If you would rather go downtown, then Pershing Square is the place to skate this holiday. Imagine a huge ice skating rink among Downtown skyscrapers and LA icons. It’s a day you won’t forget!
