New Year’s Day in L.A.

New Year’s Day has become one of those holiday’s that is reserved for football, packing up holiday decorations and generally just laying low after a particularly big night out on New Year’s Eve or just gearing up for getting back to your normal, pre-holiday madness routine. However, if you want to squeeze every ounce of fun out of your vacation, here are some fun ideas of activities do on New Year’s Day with your family!

Check out the Rose Parade

If you are in LA on New Year’s Day and you only have time to do ONE thing… then check out the Rose Parade. All of the floats are decorated with flowers and organic materials. They take up to a year to plan and execute. Entire design teams get together to create these beautiful masterpieces. Plus there are fantastic bands, a rose court and all the pomp and circumstance one would expect at a parade. Get there EARLY to get a good spot (and when we say early, we mean before the sun comes up) and enjoy the fanfare. You won’t regret it.

Amusement Parks

If you don’t feel like braving the crowds at Disneyland, try going to one of our other fabulous amusement parks including Universal Studios or Knotts Berry Farm. Part movie theme park, part movie history, Universal Studios is a fun place to take the whole family. They have movie themed rides such as Jurrassic Park : The Ride, Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers: The Ride and the Universal Experience where you can see all of the costumes and props from the last 100 years. Plus you can check out awesome movie and television sets. At Knotts, you can experience a fun family on one of their dozens of rides. You can also go to great shows and attractions in 5 themed areas. What’s great about New Year’s Day is that these parks are bound to be less crowded so you can have a great time without pushing your way through a lot of people.

Ice Skating

Get in the last ice skating of the season either downtown or at ICE in Santa Monica. ICE in Santa Monica is an 8,000 square foot rink where you can spend a few hours twirling in the New Year with your family. It will be open at 10am on New Year’s Day, so it will give you some time to sleep in a bit before hitting the ice. If you would rather go downtown, then Pershing Square is the place to skate on New Year’s Day. Imagine a huge ice skating rink among Downtown skyscrapers and LA icons. It will also open at 10am and you can buy tickets online. It’s a day you won’t forget!
