Five Unique Activities in Los Angeles

While LA is known for its beaches and, of course, Hollywood attractions, there are many unique and off-the-beaten-path places you can visit as well. So if you have the time while you are here, check out some of these spaces and places that make L.A. one of a kind!
Skyspace
Brand new to LA is the OUE Skyspace. Located nearly 1,000 feet above downtown Los Angeles on 69th and 70th floors of the U.S. Bank Tower, OUE Skyspace LA is the tallest open-air observation deck in California, offering visitors a unique 360-degree view of the city. Take in scenic sights from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and spot iconic landmarks from the Hollywood Sign to Santa Monica. Plus you can enjoy all of the great things that Downtown LA has to offer. From great restaurants to unique shopping, it has become a popular destination for anyone traveling to L.A.
Time Travel Mart
If you are looking for a REALLY unique shopping experience, then check out the Time Travel Mart in Echo Park or Mar Vista (yes, TWO locations!). The store sells humorous relics from the past, present and future, such as Barbarian Repellent, Michael Jordan pogs and varying Robot Emotions. Talk about unique mementos from your trip to Los Angeles. The best part is that every purchase goes towards free tutoring for students in creative and expository writing. So you can pick up that supply of dinosaur eggs you have been looking for and help someone at the same time. Talk about win win.
Horseback Riding
If you are looking for more than just a bike ride (which is also super fun) then strap on a cowboy hat and have some fun on one of the many horse riding adventures in Los Angeles. Yep, we said horse, not car. There are several areas in and around Los Angeles where you can go horseback riding. One place even takes you on a ride and then you can go back and rest and relax with a good bar-b-q meal. Many of these places take you through the different trails and up mountains. They are both family friendly and a great time with just you and your friends. Definitely something to do if you are looking for an out-of-the-box way to enjoy LA.
Sunken City of LA
If you and your family or friends like a good treasure hunt, then you won’t to miss out on exploring the “sunken city” of Los Angeles. Just outside of LA in San Pedro, you can hike through an area that was once a thriving (and very exclusive) neighborhood. However, in 1929 a landslide caused it to tumble into the ocean at a groundbreaking (literally!) 11 inches a day. The slide affected about 10 acres of land in San Pedro and caused major damage. It is known as the “sunken city” because it now consists of the broken foundations of houses, abandoned streetcar tracks, buckled sidewalks, and empty streets. You might also recognize it from the popular show “Fear the Walking Dead”. While you are there, you can also visit Point Fermin park nearby (which was also affected by the landslide) and houses the famous Point Fermin Lighthouse or you can also visit the Korean Friendship Bell.
Abandoned LA Zoo
If you are adventurous and don’t mind experiencing a spooky side to LA (and have already taken our Haunted in Hollywood tour), then taking a visit to the Old LA Zoo is a must on your to do list. Located on the Eastside of Griffith Park on what used to be Griffith J Griffith’s Ostritch farm, the Old Zoo was opened in 1913 and closed in the late 1950’s. When you visit, you can actually walk through some of the old stone cages and caves. You might recognize certain areas of the zoo from scenes from the movie “The Anchorman”. There is a picnic and hiking area there as well. Some people say it is quite eerie and other’s just say “lions and tigers and bears…no more” . Don’t worry, though, you can still visit the “new” LA Zoo just down the way.
