5 Fun Water Activities in Los Angeles

The great thing about Los Angeles is that you can have fun on the land and in the sea. Yes, you read that right… the sea. Our beautiful beaches are more than just a place to lay your towel down, you can also have a fantastic time on the water. And it is not just swimming or body boarding that we are talking about (although that is a definite MUST). Next time you are in town, try out one, or all, of these fun water activities.

Surf Lessons

Have you ever had a dream of visiting California and going to the beach and all of a sudden you just jump on a board and start surfing? Given all of the places in LA that offer fantastic surfing lessons, you can make that dream a reality. The weather is so great here all year long, that you can really learn to surf at almost any time. The summer is a good time to learn because the water is warmer and the waves tend to be more mellow in some of the more popular spots. Finding a good instructor is key to your experience and with many different options dotted along Santa Monica and Venice beaches, you will likely have an unforgettable experience.

Parasailing

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No… it’s you!! Parasailing is one of those activities that is just a blast to be a part of. It feels like you are flying over the water. And talk about the view. You won’t find a better one in Los Angeles. In most cases, you launch and land from the deck of the boat. There are a few different companies between LA and Orange County that you can hire for your parasailing adventure. Even if you are a novice or have been parasailing all over the world, you don’t want to miss out on this great ride in the ocean.

Day, or night, Cruises

Would you rather be on the water in a boat than in the water swimming? Then a day or night cruise is a good option for you. You can enjoy the water while skimming through the ocean on a yacht or a cruiser. From day cruises, to party cruises, dinner cruises and sunset cocktail cruises. Whether you are a family looking for a memorable day trip or a group of friends looking to get away on the water, a short cruise is an unforgettable activity. There are many different companies in LA and Orange County that conduct these tours so be sure to research the best one for you!

Grunion Run

Every year, between March and September small silvery fish that look like sardines come up to the beach shores at night and lay eggs that are then fertilized. First, the female grunions wash themselves upon the shore after high tide, then half bury themselves into the sand and deposit eggs into a nest. Then male grunion join the females and fertilize the eggs. This natural event happens after 10pm during different times of the summer. There are so many on the beach that you are surrounded by them. If you are over 16 and have a fishing license, then you can catch the grunion for dinner the next day or you can just observe this natural phenomenon that you won’t get to experience in school except in books.

Whale Watching

What’s a better day than hanging out on a boat in the middle of the ocean? Catching sight of a whale, of course! Whale watching is a very popular and fun way to enjoy to ocean without getting sand in your bathing suit. While it used to be a primarily Fall and Spring activity, because of migration patterns in the last few years, you can enjoy it in the summer as well. In Southern California, you can see gray whales, blue whales and humpback whales among others. While they won’t do a performance for you like at Sea World, you can witness the majesty of them in their natural habitat all from the deck of a boat and enjoy the beautiful weather of LA all at the same time. Talk about win win.
