Sunset Boulevard at rush hour in Los Angeles

5 Great Sights Day or Night in LA

It is Daylight Saving Time once again in Los Angeles! The days may be getting shorter, but there is always something fun to do in LA in the day OR the night. Even if your time is limited here and you only have one day, we have put together some suggestions of great sites that you can see both in the day or the night. So if you hang out at the beach a little longer or you want to see some more star homes or Beverly Hills, you can still see plenty at night.

The Sunset Strip

Talk about a place that is very different during day and evening. While the Sunset Strip is cool to see anytime of the day, it really comes alive at night with the various clubs that dot along the 1.7 mile stretch of road. When you look at the storied history of this place, you would almost think it was created in a writer’s imagination. From mobsters to comedians, rockers to movie stars – this area in Hollywood has seen it all in the last century. The Sunset Strip is a definite “must see” on any trip to Los Angeles. It’s where Fred Astaire, Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Bing Crosby and Lana Turner partied and Judy Garland performed at Amateur Night along with Jackie Gleason. You can see where The Doors as well as Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Poison, L.A. Guns and Guns N’ Roses performed. And, if you get the chance, take some time to catch as show at The Laugh Factory. This famous club launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Howie Mandel, Michael Keaton, Ed Begley Jr. and David Letterman. Additionally, Dave Chapelle, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr and Rodney Dangerfield have all performed there, and it is still a hugely popular comedy spot in Los Angeles.

Griffith Observatory

The most visited public observatory in the world, The Griffith Observatory hosts around 1 million people a year. It is one of the first institutions in the United States that was dedicated to public science and is still a national leader in public astronomy. As stipulated in the will of Griffith J. Griffith’s (who gave the land to Los Angeles), entrance to the Observatory is free of charge. While at the Observatory, you can view shows at the Samuel Oshchin Planetarium for a nominal fee or participate in monthly public star parties, daily talks and presentations, and periodic special events. Last, but certainly not least, you can view the spectacular, sweeping views of Los Angeles from atop this amazing part of Los Angeles. While the views during the day are spectacular, some people think that the night view is even better. It is definitely a place where you can see how big LA actually is and it is gorgeous all lit up.

The Santa Monica Pier

A great place to visit night or day the Santa Monica pier. While there, you can take a spin on the solar powered Ferris Wheel at Pacific Amusement Park or enjoy an ice cream after riding the carousel originally built in the 1920’s. They also have an awesome aquarium located just below the carousel on the beach level. It has over 100 species of marine animals and plants that are located in the Santa Monica Bay. It is an interactive and fun place to visit and perfect for both adults and children. At night, it is all lit up and you can still ride the rides at the amusement park or eat at one of the delicious restaurants there.

Hollywood Boulevard

The energy on Hollywood Boulevard is alive day or night. Everyone loves to visit this famous street that is home to The El Capital, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, The Pantages Theatre, Hollywood & Highland and so much more. No doubt about it, one of the most iconic things about Hollywood is the historic Walk of Fame that is along Hollywood Boulevard – where you can literally walk all over your favorite stars. Running 1.3 miles East to West on the boulevard the walk consists of over 2,500 five pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded along the sidewalk. There are also a ton of food options along the boulevard – from hot dog vendors to bar food to elegant sit down restaurants, they have it all. The Boulevard is lit up so you won’t miss anything. If there is only one place you can visit while in LA, then this should be at the top of your list.

The Grove

The Grove opened in 2002 to much fanfare as a different type of shopping experience. It is designed to be like a charming small town square — think Disneyland shopping mall. Sinatra plays over the loudspeakers as you stroll down what feels like Main Street in front of Banana Republic, Ugg, Zara, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Girl, Apple, and more. It is perfect for day or night exploring as it is lit up and the shops and restaurants are open until late. It is attached the the Farmer’s Market where there is a variety of food options or you can go to one of the great restaurants there. During the holidays, the Grove is decked out with the main attracting being the huge Christmas tree in the middle of the square. The Grove also has a movie theatre so you can really have a full day there without ever getting back into your car – a win win for everyone.

Our tour was AMAZING. This is one of the most professional companies I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I would recommend them in a heartbeat.

  • “LOOK NO FURTHER”

I can recall doing a bus tour of LA a number of years ago, and that tour did not remotely compare to what we experienced with our number one guide Rivers. Our family of four, including two boys aged 13 and 10, had the best day possible.

  • “Worth the Splurge”

Eight hours seems like a lot of time, but the day just flew by. It was so fun and interesting. I would do this again with no regrets.
