It’s October… which means Halloween is right around the corner! And what better way to celebrate the spookiest of days than exploring the amazing things that LA has to offer during Halloween. Whether you like to dress up and parade around or explore LA’s underworld, you are sure to have fun in LA during October. Here are 5 of our favorite things to do in LA during Halloween.
The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval
About a half a million people participate in the annual West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. With amazing food trucks and entertainment situated along Santa Monica Boulevard, there is no doubt as to why this is such a popular event every year. They even have a crowning of an honorary “Queen of the Carnaval”. Of course, the best part of is that you will get to see some of the most awesome and outrageous costumes up close and personal. With free admission and hours of fun, what more could you ask for?
From big to small, there is a crop of pumpkin patches all over Los Angeles. And no longer are they just a place to go pick up your favorite pumpkin that you will carve into the perfect, spooky jack-o-lantern. They now have pony rides, bounce houses, face painting and a plethora of other fun things to do besides finding that perfect pumpkin. At Mr. Bones in West Hollywood, you may run into some famous faces alongside those pumpkins (Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba and Gwen Stefani have reportedly been seen there in the past) and if you are looking for a little bit of country in a lot of city, you can check out Shawn’s Pumpkin Patch in Culver City. If you are looking to get away from it all (and when we say away, we mean a freeway drive away), you can check out Underwood Farms in Moorpark or Tanaka Farms in Irvine.
LA pulls out all the stops when it comes to haunted houses. It’s not dubbed the “Entertainment Capital of the World” for nothing. There are so many amazing haunted houses and spooky places to visit in LA, but we can’t name them all. So here are 3 of our favorites:
– Halloween Horror Nights @ Universal Studios – this isn’t your neighbor’s haunted house. You will experience some heart stopping, scary action featuring Hollywood’s most terrifying movies, TV shows and music. They have “scare zones”, haunted mazes, scary rides and so much more.
– The Haunted Hayride @ Griffith Park – certain areas in Griffith Park are called the most “paranormally active” in California which means that the Haunted Hayride is a fantastic adventure during Halloween. This year’s theme is “Echo’s from the Rift” and features a hayride with “leviathans” the “In-Between” and “Purgatory” Haunted Village.
– Los Angeles Live Steamers Halloween Ghost Train – Taking place at “Travel Town” this is a fun 20 minute ride with professionally designed displays lights and sound. Perfect for kids and for adults who don’t like spooky creatures jumping out at them.
Famous Haunted Places
While haunted houses are all fun and games, there are some places in LA that are rumored to truly be haunted. Some of our favorites are The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the ghost of Marilyn Monroe has reportedly been seen. The famous Comedy Store on Sunset Strip used to be a mob run club in the 1940’s and 50’s and present day employees have claimed to hear sounds and voices coming from the basement where people were reportedly ‘taken out’. A famous “haunt” in Long Beach, The Queen Mary or the “Grey Ghost” is also said to be haunted. They take that theme up a notch during Halloween with “Dark Harbor” — their version of a haunted house that is actually haunted.
LA Insider Tours Haunted Hollywood Tour
Of course, we could not write about our favorite things to do in LA for Halloween without including our “Haunted Hollywood” Tour in the lineup. This 5 hour ghost tour shows you the scary underbelly of Los Angeles and Hollywood. The tour will take you to see the locations surrounding the OJ case, where the Manson murders took place and the house where the Menendez brothers killed their parents for money. We will also show you the places where Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, John Belushi, River Phoenix and Janis Joplin met their untimely demise along with some of the graves of the biggest Hollywood Stars. And if that is not enough, we will round out the tour by taking you to a haunted bar in Hollywood that was rumored to be where the Black Dahlia had her last drink.
So come join us and fall in love with the spooky side of Los Angeles.
- “Don’t Hesitate….Just Do It!!”
The tour was a lot of fun and he even took us to less well known spots for some great photo ops! Definitely recommend doing and would absolutely do another tour with these guys when next back in LA!

- “Perfect fit for our family!”
Our tour was AMAZING. This is one of the most professional companies I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I would recommend them in a heartbeat.

- “LOOK NO FURTHER”
I can recall doing a bus tour of LA a number of years ago, and that tour did not remotely compare to what we experienced with our number one guide Rivers. Our family of four, including two boys aged 13 and 10, had the best day possible.
~ Lindsay O, Hepburn Springs, Australia
- “Worth the Splurge”
Eight hours seems like a lot of time, but the day just flew by. It was so fun and interesting. I would do this again with no regrets.
